Engraving feasibility

Will your design engrave cleanly at the size chosen?

The size set in Step 2 decides everything: every line and gap in the artwork grows or shrinks with it. We measure them at that size and turn them into a safe engraving depth.

How the decision is made

    The size sets the scale

    The length × width from Step 2 fixes how many millimetres each part of your artwork covers. Double the size and every line and gap doubles too.

    We scan the design

    We find the centre line of every stroke and every gap and measure how wide each one is. To ignore stray pixels, the thin end of the range counts as the thinnest line and narrowest gap.

    Two limits set the depth

    A raised line can stand only about twice as tall as it is wide, and a channel can't be cut deeper than it is wide. Whichever limit is stricter decides the maximum depth.

    We give a verdict

    Feasible at 2 mm or more, marginal between 1 and 2 mm, not recommended below 1 mm. If it fails, the table shows the size that works, or you can thicken and simplify the design.

Worked example line 1.3 mm, gap 2.5 mm
depthmax = min( 2.0 × 1.3 , 1.0 × 2.5 ) = min( 2.6 , 2.5 ) = 2.5 mm
working range = 0.8 × 2.5 to 1.2 × 2.5 = 2.0 – 3.0 mm Halve the size and the same design gives 1.25 mm, which is too shallow. That is why the size chosen by the client matters.
Rules used (editable draft values)

This is a planning estimate, not a manufacturing guarantee. The ratios and thresholds are draft values that will be tuned to Cratly's production results. It assumes the artwork is raised and the background is cut away, and a colour logo is treated as one solid shape unless “Dark pixels only” is chosen.
